Foods to Enjoy Freely

Getting braces does not mean living on smoothies for two years. You can still enjoy most of your favorite foods with some smart modifications. The rules are straightforward: avoid anything that is hard enough to break a bracket, sticky enough to pull off a wire, or crunchy enough to bend your archwire. Everything else is fair game.

The Safe List

Soft proteins like chicken, fish, eggs, and tofu. All cooked vegetables. Soft fruits like bananas, berries, and sliced peaches. Pasta, rice, and soft bread. Yogurt, cheese, and pudding. Soups and stews. Smoothies and milkshakes.

Foods to Avoid Completely

Hard candy and lollipops — they break brackets on contact. Popcorn — kernels wedge under wires and hulls get trapped in brackets. Whole apples and corn on the cob — cut them into pieces instead. Ice — chewing ice is the number one cause of broken brackets. Caramel, taffy, and gummy candy — they pull wires and bands loose. Nuts and hard pretzels — too much force on brackets.

Smart Modifications

Cut corn off the cob. Slice apples into thin wedges. Break pizza crust into small bites instead of biting into it. Cut sandwiches into quarters. Chop raw carrots into thin coins and steam them slightly. Cook broccoli until it is fork-tender. These small changes let you enjoy nearly everything while protecting your braces.
