Dental Bridge vs. Implant: Which Tooth Replacement Is Right for You?

Both options replace missing teeth, but they work very differently. Here is an honest comparison to help you decide.

Two Paths to Replacing a Missing Tooth

If you are missing a tooth, you have two main options: a dental bridge or an implant. Both restore your smile and ability to chew, but they work very differently and have distinct trade-offs in cost, longevity, maintenance, and impact on surrounding teeth. Here is an honest comparison to help you decide β€” or at least have an informed conversation with your dentist.

How Each Option Works

A dental bridge literally bridges the gap by anchoring an artificial tooth to the natural teeth on either side. Those anchor teeth are filed down and fitted with crowns to support the bridge. A dental implant replaces the entire tooth independently β€” a titanium post is surgically placed in the jawbone to serve as an artificial root, then a crown is attached on top.

The Real Cost Comparison

A bridge costs $2,000-$5,000 upfront but lasts 10-15 years, meaning you may need 2-3 replacements over a lifetime. An implant costs $3,000-$6,000 upfront but can last 25+ years. Over 30 years, a bridge may cost $6,000-$15,000 total while an implant costs $3,000-$8,000. Implants are often cheaper long-term despite the higher initial price.

Impact on Surrounding Teeth

This is the biggest differentiator. A bridge requires permanently altering two healthy teeth to serve as anchors β€” removing enamel that can never be replaced. An implant stands alone without touching adjacent teeth. If a bridge fails, the anchor teeth may also need treatment. For this reason alone, many dentists recommend implants when possible.

When a Bridge Makes More Sense

Bridges may be preferable when the anchor teeth already need crowns anyway, when jawbone is insufficient for an implant and you do not want bone grafting, when you need immediate results (bridges take 2-3 weeks vs. 3-6 months for implants), or when cost is the primary concern and you need the lowest upfront option.
