Our patients are always excited to reach the end of their orthodontic treatments. They’re free from the discomfort accompanying adjustments, have more foods they can enjoy, and look forward to their dazzling new smile. Just one more step remains. Your orthodontist will recommend power chain braces to close any lingering gaps between your teeth.

You may have questions about power chain braces. Just what are power chain braces for, and how do they work? What’s the difference between power chains vs. regular braces? How long do you need to wear power chains, and how do you care for them? Here’s the skinny on power chain braces and why your teeth will thank you for them!

What are power chain braces for?

Power chains are strings of connected elastic rings that help close the gaps between teeth. Power chains are usually made from an elastic material, but in some cases, metal twists are preferred. Power chain braces are used to address several orthodontic issues, including:

Closing spaces between teeth

Power chain braces exert more pressure than brackets and archwires, so they speed up the treatment process and close gaps between teeth faster. Power chains are often used on spaced teeth or gaps arising from tooth extractions.

Correcting crooked teeth

The constant pressure applied by power chains moves teeth into alignment.

Fixing misalignments

Power chains add additional pressure when used with traditional braces, realigning teeth faster.

Resolving tooth rotations

Teeth can rotate out of alignment due to loss of jawbone density, a growing jawbone, tooth grinding, tooth loss, periodontal disease, and age. Power chains return rotating teeth to their correct position.

Malocclusions

The same pressure used to align misaligned teeth treats various conditions, including overbites, crossbites, and crowded teeth.

Improving the dental midline

The “dental midline” is an imaginary line drawn between your top and bottom middle front teeth. It’s the center of your smile and ideally aligns with the center of your face. Power braces move teeth to make them more symmetrical with your face for a better smile.

Power Chains vs. Regular Braces

Both power chains and traditional braces use elastic rings to apply the pressure needed to realign teeth. Traditional elastics fit over individual brackets. Power chains connect the brackets to form an uninterrupted band that runs over the teeth. Your orthodontist may place a power chain on a few or all of your teeth to treat several dental issues simultaneously.

When Do You Get Power Chains?

Orthodontists recommend power chain braces towards the end of orthodontic treatment to close any remaining gaps, align teeth, or improve your bite. Power chains are ideal for children between the ages of 8 and 14 as their jaws are still developing, but adults can also benefit from power chain braces to close gaps or realign rotating teeth.

Do Power Chains Hurt?

Irritation and discomfort are common after braces adjustments and can occur when power chain braces are installed or replaced, but don’t worry. The discomfort subsides within a few days after the appointment. Over-the-counter pain relievers such as Tylenol can help ease the discomfort.

How Long Do Power Chains Take To Close Gaps?

How long you need to wear power chains depends on each individual. The total treatment length will be different for each patient. For example, your dentist will recommend you wear power chains for 8 months while your friend may only wear them for just 5 weeks. Don’t worry if it takes a while: your smile will get there!

Dentists may recommend keeping power chains on for a while after achieving their purpose. In such cases, the chains act like a retainer, preventing the teeth from returning to their original position.

Types of Power Chains for Braces

  • Closed Power Chains connect to every tooth without spaces between the brace rings. Each ring connects to the next ring in the power chain. Closed power chain braces close small gaps and fine-tune alignment towards the end of orthodontic treatment.
  • Short Power Chains connect to every other bracket and are often used to close large gaps or gaps after tooth extraction.
  • Long Power Chains connect to every third brace bracket and are used to close large gaps to generalized spacing when there are multiple gaps between the teeth.

Your dentist will select the correct type of power chain for your treatment plan. You may wear different chains at various treatment stages.

Choosing Power Chain Braces Colors

Power chains come in the same colors as regular brace ligatures, so finding a color that matches your style is easy. Keep in mind that certain foods and drinks can stain power chain braces. Colors least likely to stain include silver or smoked tones. If your power chains stain, it’s not a big deal - your orthodontist will replace the elastics at your next adjustment.

H2: Caring for Your Power Chain Braces

Use a soft-bristled toothbrush

Brush gently to minimize strain on your braces and power chains.

Floss regularly

Flossing removes food particles caught in your braces and power chains. Here’s a helpful tip: floss threaders make flossing with braces easy.

Rinse after brushing and flossing

Swish water or a fluoride-based rinse in your mouth after brushing and flossing to help remove food particles.

Check your braces

After cleaning your teeth, use a mirror to check for damage or loose ends on your braces or power chain. Report any damage to your orthodontist.

Avoid certain foods

If you’re familiar with orthodontic treatment, you know what foods to eat with braces and what to avoid. Much the same advice applies to power chain braces;

  • Sticky foods can get lodged in braces and power chains.
  • Biting into hard food items like corn on the cob or carrots can break your braces or power chain.
  • High-sugar foods can encourage plaque accumulation.
