Why Retainers Are Non-Negotiable
Here is the truth nobody wants to hear: retainers are forever. After spending 18-24 months in braces or aligners, your teeth have a strong tendency to shift back toward their original positions. This is called relapse, and it happens to everyone who does not wear their retainer. The first year after braces is critical, but even years later, your teeth can move if you stop wearing your retainer entirely.
Types of Retainers
Hawley retainers are the classic wire-and-acrylic type that is removable and durable. Clear retainers (Essix/Vivera) look like Invisalign trays and are popular for their invisibility. Permanent retainers are thin wires bonded to the back of your front teeth — you never have to remember to wear them. Many orthodontists recommend a combination: permanent on the bottom and removable on top.
How Long Do You Wear Them?
First 3-6 months: Full-time wear (22 hours/day, just like aligners). Months 6-12: Nighttime wear only (8-10 hours while sleeping). Year 2 and beyond: Nighttime wear several nights per week, indefinitely. Your orthodontist may adjust this schedule based on how stable your teeth remain.
What Happens If You Stop
Teeth begin shifting within days of stopping retainer wear. Within weeks to months, you may notice visible changes. Within a year, significant relapse can occur — sometimes enough to require retreatment. The cost of retreatment far exceeds the minor inconvenience of wearing a retainer.
