Frequently Asked Questions About Retainers
How long do I have to wear my retainer?
Initially, full-time (20+ hours) for several months. Then typically nightly for life - yes, life! Teeth naturally want to shift. Think of retainers as maintenance for your investment in straight teeth.
What happens if I stop wearing my retainer?
Teeth will gradually shift back toward their original positions. The longer you go without wearing it, the more they'll move. If your retainer no longer fits, contact us before more shifting occurs.
How do I clean my retainer?
Brush it gently with a soft toothbrush and water daily. Weekly, soak in retainer cleaner or a denture tablet. Never use hot water - it can warp the plastic. Keep it in its case when not wearing.
My retainer feels tight - is that bad?
Slight tightness when you first put it in is normal and means it's doing its job. If it's very tight or painful, you may have gone too long without wearing it. Wear it more consistently and call us if discomfort persists.
Can I get a permanent retainer instead?
Yes! A bonded (permanent) retainer is a thin wire glued behind your front teeth. It's invisible and works 24/7. The downside: flossing is harder and it can break. Many patients use both types.
