Frequently Asked Questions About Early Orthodontics
What age should my child see an orthodontist?
The American Association of Orthodontists recommends an evaluation by age 7. This doesn't mean treatment starts then - it lets us monitor development and intervene at the optimal time if needed.
What problems does early orthodontics fix?
Early treatment can correct crossbites, make room for crowded teeth, reduce risk of trauma to protruding teeth, and guide jaw growth. Some issues are much easier to fix in growing children.
Will my child still need braces later?
Possibly. Phase 1 (early) treatment addresses specific issues while your child is still growing. Phase 2 (full braces/aligners in teen years) may still be needed, but it's often shorter and simpler.
What is a palate expander?
A device that gradually widens the upper jaw to create more room for teeth and improve bite. It's most effective in children whose jaws are still growing. Parents turn a small key daily to activate it.
How do I know if my child needs early treatment?
Signs include: early or late loss of baby teeth, difficulty chewing, mouth breathing, thumb sucking past age 5, crowded or misplaced teeth, and jaws that shift or make sounds. We can evaluate at your child's visit.
