Your Child's First Dentist Visit: How to Make It a Great Experience

A positive first visit sets the tone for a lifetime of healthy dental habits. Here is how to prepare.

Why the First Visit Matters So Much

Your child's first dental visit sets the tone for their entire relationship with dental care. A positive first experience creates a child who looks forward to the dentist. A negative one can create anxiety that lasts into adulthood — research shows 75% of adults with dental phobia trace it back to a bad childhood experience. Here is how to make that first visit a success.

When to Schedule It

The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry recommends a first visit by age 1 or within 6 months of the first tooth — whichever comes first. This surprises many parents, but early visits establish a dental home, catch problems before they become painful, and normalize the dental office environment while your child is still naturally curious rather than fearful.

How to Prepare Your Child

Read children's books about the dentist a few weeks before. Play pretend dentist at home — count their teeth, look in their mouth with a flashlight, and use a toothbrush as a dental tool. Use positive language only — never say words like hurt, shot, or pain. Do not transfer your own anxiety — children pick up on parental stress instantly.

What Happens During the Visit

For very young children (under 3), we use a knee-to-knee exam where your child sits on your lap facing you, then leans back onto the dentist's lap. This keeps them feeling secure. The dentist counts teeth, checks the bite, examines gums and soft tissues, and looks for any developmental concerns. A gentle cleaning and fluoride treatment may be done if appropriate. The entire visit takes about 30-45 minutes.

Our offices are designed for kids — with games, TVs, and colorful spaces that make children feel excited rather than anxious. Our pediatric staff is specially trained in child psychology and behavior management. We never rush, never force, and always let children set the pace. Most kids leave asking when they can come back.
