What Is a Dental Abscess?
A dental abscess is a pocket of pus caused by a bacterial infection. It can occur at the tip of the root (periapical abscess) or in the gums (periodontal abscess). While antibiotics can help, an abscess won't go away on its own — and untreated, it can spread to your jaw, head, or neck.
Seek immediate care if you have: difficulty breathing or swallowing, fever over 101°F, swelling spreading to your eye or neck, or confusion. These indicate a spreading infection.
Symptoms of a Dental Abscess
