5 Signs Your Wisdom Teeth Are Coming In
Wisdom teeth typically emerge between ages 17-25, earning their name because they arrive during the transition to adulthood. About 85% of people will eventually need at least one wisdom tooth removed. Recognizing the early signs of eruption helps you get ahead of potential problems before they cause pain or damage to neighboring teeth.
1. Jaw Pain or Stiffness
A dull, aching pain in the back of your jaw β especially on one or both sides β is often the first sign of wisdom teeth moving beneath the gum. The pain may come and go and can feel worse when chewing or opening your mouth wide. This happens because the teeth are pressing against bone and tissue as they try to erupt.
2. Swollen, Red, or Tender Gums
The gum tissue behind your last molars may become swollen, red, and tender to the touch. You might notice a flap of gum tissue (called an operculum) partially covering the emerging tooth. This flap can trap food and bacteria, leading to a localized infection called pericoronitis.
3. Crowding of Other Teeth
If you notice your front teeth starting to shift or overlap β especially after years of being straight β wisdom teeth may be the culprit. As they push forward, they can exert pressure on the entire dental arch, causing crowding that was not there before.
4. Headaches and Ear Pain
Wisdom tooth pressure can radiate pain to unexpected areas. Headaches, earaches, and even sinus pressure can all be caused by erupting or impacted wisdom teeth. The trigeminal nerve that serves your teeth also extends to these areas, which is why the pain can feel confusing.
5. Difficulty Opening Your Mouth
If you find it increasingly hard to open your mouth fully, impacted wisdom teeth may be to blame. The inflammation and swelling they cause can affect your jaw joint and muscles, limiting your range of motion.
