Debunking Dental Myths

We’re sure that you must have heard at least one dental myth in your lifetime. That’s why we’ve created a list of the most common dental myths and decided to debunk them! Here’s what you should know!

Myth: Braces interfere with playing sports or playing a musical instrument.

Nothing could be further from the truth. You are still free to do all the activities you love and enjoy but may need a short period of adjustment. This is completely normal and after a few days you won’t even know you’re wearing any braces! But safety first! We always recommend using a mouthguard for contact sports to protect your mouth.

Myth: You can eat whatever you want with braces. Orthodontists just want you to avoid “bad” foods.

Although it is true that we want you to avoid “bad” foods, certain foods can break brackets and wires, which is the reason why we tell you to avoid them. You should avoid anything sticky or chewy (like caramel or chewing gum) and hard (hard candy, nuts, apples, even ice!). Also, foods that can get stuck between your teeth (such as corn on the cob, popcorns, ribs) are off-limits!

Myth: Braces are terrible, and you will be in pain for YEARS!

Braces are awesome, even though you will feel mild discomfort for a few days after they are placed on your teeth and after we adjust them. Discomfort is temporary, but your healthy smile is permanent!

Myth: I don’t need to take my child to the dentist until they are much older.

The truth is that dental care is very important for children. We recommend that your primary physician checks your child’s oral health as early as six months of age and that you bring your child in for their “First Rodeo” when they are 12 months old – at the latest. This will give us an opportunity to catch any future dental problems and provide preventive treatment and advice.

Myth: All dentists are alike and most children will always be afraid of them.

This might have been true in the past, but the most common question our young patients ask their parents when at Rodeo is “Do we have to go home?”! Sounds impossible? Not at our office! Kids just love the vibrant and cheerful environment of our offices from the get go! And the fun doesn’t stop when the dental examination starts because all our dentists are specially trained to work with kids and are Board Certified in pediatric dentistry. Our dentist team simply loves kids and wants to show them that going to the dentist can be extremely fun!
